Performance & Impact

Since 2003, StoryCorps has touched the lives of over half a million people.

At StoryCorps, we know the power of one great question. When we sit down face to face, ask to hear someone’s truth, and listen to it, we begin to recognize where our lives intersect. We learn we have more in common than what divides us. StoryCorps’ work makes a long-lasting change in the lives of participants and listeners.

94% of listeners surveyed in 2019 told us that StoryCorps content helped them better understand the experiences of people who are different from them.

Since 2003, we’ve recorded with over half a million people of all backgrounds and beliefs, preserving them in the StoryCorps Archive, housed at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. The archive comprises one of the first and the largest born-digital collections of human voices, featuring tens of thousands of conversations recorded across the United States and around the world.

Our Mobile Tour has visited and made stops in more than 200 communities across the continental United States (and Hawaii), recording over 30,000 interviews. We’ve partnered with thousands of organizations to help reach marginalized populations, recording and sharing stories of people whose lives may otherwise not be known. Our story collections draw attention to specific populations and have been viewed by tens of thousands of people. StoryCorps OutLoud is a targeted effort to collect, preserve, and share the stories of LGBTQ elders who lived before their community’s modern civil rights movement was born. Through our Military Voices Initiative, StoryCorps teamed up with veteran service organizations across the country to honor the millions of men and women who served in the armed forces, their family members, and others from the military community as part of our Military Voices Initiative tour. American Pathways is a new initiative to record, preserve, and share the stories and experiences of refugees, asylees, immigrants, and Muslims living in the United States.

In seeking to touch the lives of every person in this country, StoryCorps continues to leverage the power of our content to transform people’s beliefs and enhance their understanding of the lives of people whom they have never met. Your support makes this work possible.
